What is The Cult Film Collective?
Dedicated to championing the projection and preservation of 35mm and 16mm film, the Cult Film Collective presents regular screenings of these prints at the Trylon Cinema, many sourced from private collections or archives.
The Collective is made up of four co-founders: Andy, John, Malcolm and Sarah.

What should I know about the Cult Film Collective Membership program?
Memberships are monthly subscriptions. In exchange for a monthly fee, members gain access to a video rental catalogue, exclusive screenings, meetups and a monthly newsletter.

Is the Cult Film Collective is opening a video store?
Not quite. We grew up on video stores and miss them dearly, but opening a brick and mortar is not a feasible reality (for now…). So we made our catalogue virtual!

How does the virtual video rental system work?
Our video rental system operates on a pick-up/drop-off model. Members pick-up and return their rentals at the Trylon Cinema, not unlike the reservation system used by the Hennepin County Library.

Where do I pick up my items?
The Trylon Cinema. 2820 E 33rd St, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Tucked behind Wildflyer Coffee. A Cult Film Collective volunteer will be present to coordinate pick-up.

When may I pick-up/drop-off my items?
Pick-ups occur on Fridays, 30 minutes before and 15 minutes after the 7:00 pm show. Movies may be returned at the box office during the Trylon’s operating hours or 24/7 at the AVS Solutions dropbox next door.

Can I ask one of the Trylon staff for help if I have a question?
The Trylon staff is not directly related or responsible for the Cult Film Collective’s Video Library. Please direct questions back to us.

Why physical media?
We believe the tactility lends the movie-viewing experience a level of intention that streaming does not.

Do I have to be a member to rent movies?
Yes. However, you do not need a membership to browse the collection.

How do I play DVDs, Blu-rays and VHS tapes?
VHS cassettes require a VHS cassette player. There is no mistaking a cassette slot for a disc drive. DVDs require a DVD-compatible disc drive or DVD player. DVD players do not play Blu-rays. Blu-rays require a Blu-ray-compatible disc drive or Blu-ray player. Blu-ray players do play DVDs.

The vast majority of our movies are Region A/1 or Region Free, however we will offer a handful of films that are Region locked. We highly recommend obtaining a Region Free media player. If you need help finding one, drop us a line at cultvideocollective@gmail.com.

How big is your collection?
Currently, the collection holds about three hundred items. However, as membership increases, so too will the number of films in the collection. With any luck, this collection will become more and more comprehensive inside a larger physical space. Our long term goal is to have a collection of a couple thousand titles.

What makes the Cult Film Collective catalogue special?
The films in our collection are hyper curated and eclectic. We are not bound by rights and bandwidth.

Will you guys eventually carry more popular or recent releases? (ie. the latest MCU or Pixar movies)
We’ll call it by ear on individual films, but as it stands now, we will not have newly released popular films. We will, however, have many of the newer boutique label releases and will be open to requests. (Though, we promise nothing)

Do you sell movies? (DVDs, Blu-Ray, VHS, etc.)
Not right now.

Do you buy movies?
Not right now.

Do you accept donations?
Yes, and we have a Wishlist, too!

Do you rent video games?
No.

How is the video rental catalogue built?
We use MyTurn, a Baltimore-based cloud platform.
